The New York Yankees had won NINE straight series going into this week, which was their LONGEST stretch since 1998, so this was a HISTORIC stretch that had to come to an END, which it did NORTH of the Border in Toronto this week. LOSING to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday Night and then LOSING the first TWO games to the Blue Jays, the Yankees SALVAGED the FINAL game of the series to AVOID the SWEEP going into Cleveland against the Indians this weekend.
Yankees vs Blue Jays Series RECAP:
Game ONE- After ALL of the controversy after the game on Sunday Night and things getting WORSE on Tuesday for Clint Frazier, he was DESTINED to be the HERO of the game and he hit a TWO run MOONSHOT to give the Yankees the lead.
Masahiro Tanaka was on the mound for the Yankees and he was FLAWLESS for the first FOUR innings of the game and after a CONTROVERSIAL strike zone call seemed to UNRAVEL him. The Blue Jays scored FOUR runs to take the lead and EVEN THOUGH the Yankees had the game TYING run ON BASE in the SIXTH, SEVENTH, EIGHTH, and NINTH innings they did NOT get that runner to cross home plate and FELL in the FIRST game of the weekend.
Game TWO- James Paxton took the mound for the Yankees on Wednesday night, who was making a start in his home country of Canada. The LAST time he pitched in Canada, he pitched a NO HITTER and he threw FOUR No-Hit innings in his LAST start prior to Wednesday before he was PULLED due to JUST coming back from an INJURY so things were LINING up GREAT for him but he was AWFUL on Wednesday falling behind 3-0, but the Yankees are NEVER out of it.
The Yankees MOUNTED BACK to take a 4-3 lead in the game before Paxton gave up ANOTHER run to TIE the game but then DJLM AKA the BEST hitter in baseball HISTORY with Runners in SCORING position so a runner on second base in a TIE game.

Coming into Wednesday night, the Yankees were 32-0 this season when having a LEAD going into the EIGHTH inning so they were looking PRIMED to WIN the game BUT Zack Britton just did NOT have it and the Blue Jays scored FIVE runs in the game including the FIRST career home run by Vladdy Guerrero Jr. against the Yankees and that was a BIG gut punch as the Yankee bullpen gave up SEVEN UNANSWERED runs which is UNHEARD of.
The Yankees had LOST their FIRST series since May 1 and had LOST THREE games in a row for the FIRST time since the MIDDLE of April so that was a LITTLE alarming but they needed to SHRUG off that LOSS and AVOID the sweep on Thursday night with FORMER Blue Jay JA Happ on the mound.
Happ had NOT been GREAT this season but really TURNED the corner in his LAST start against the Red Sox and when the team needed him the MOST having lost THREE straight, Happ put the team on his back throwing SEVEN innings, giving up just ONE run in as CLOSE to a MUST WIN game that a FIRST Place team can have in June.
The pitching staff combined off Happ and the Bullpen did their job giving up that one run by Happ then another in GARBAGE time in the NINTH and Aaron Hicks made sure that the Yankees AVOIDED the sweep.

Thanks to the WIN last night, the Yankees have been SWEPT just ONCE this season earlier this season in Houston against the Astros, who they will play at Yankee Stadium LATER this month, which is AMAZING if you think about ALL the talent that has been on the INJURED LIST for them this season.
The BIG reason why the Yankees have CONTINUED to EXCEL in the ABSENCE of ALL the BIG guns has been DJ LeMahieu, who was the ONE guy they needed LAST season. The Yankees were TERRIBLE driving in Runners in SCORING Position last season, but DJ LeMahieu LEADS the MLB in average with Runners in SCORING Position this season and that has kept them AFLOAT this season. He is among the MOST Valuable Players on this team if NOT ALL of the American League, Brian Cashman did it AGAIN.
One guy that has had a COUPLE of ROUGH days is Clint Frazier, who continues to be a GREAT player on the field but his ISSUES with the media CONTINUED into Toronto when he faced the media for the FIRST time since Sunday’s CONTROVERSY and he CONTINUES to make things WORSE for himself. Clint needs to STOP talking for a COUPLE of days and let everything blow over and as I write this on Thursday night, he seems to have TURNED the corner with the media, which is GREAT for ALL the parties involved.
During the game on Thursday night, it was announced that the Atlanta Braves had signed Dallas Keuchel for the REST of the season, which is someone the Yankees pursued AGGRESSIVELY ever since he was ELIGIBLE to sign WITHOUT draft pick compensation at MIDNIGHT on Sunday night. It looked like the Yankees were the FRONT runners to sign him, but they MISSED OUT on him and that is PUZZLING to me because the Yankees are ONE starter SHORT right now I think so they NEED to acquire someone or hope Luis Severino comes back SOON but he is still 6-8 weeks away from RETURNING so there is that and with Domingo German’s Innings LIMIT looming, they NEED a pitcher during the Trade Deadline.
The OBVIOUS possible candidates for them to PURSUE are Max Scherzer and Madison Baumgarner but Brian Cashman is a genius that is capable of HOODWINKING the Chicago White Sox to send Lucas Giolito to the Yankees so NEVER count him out.
The Yankees will get HEALTHIER tonight when Didi Gregorius makes his SEASON DEBUT against the Indians after having Tommy John Surgery in the offseason. The Yankees had made it PRETTY CLEAR since the END of the 2018 season that he would be BACK in June-July and he is going to back on June SEVENTH so he is CLEARLY ahead of schedule.
There are NO other really updates with any of the other INJURED Yankees except Giancarlo Stanton is CLOSE to playing some REHAB games but he RE-AGGRAVATED his injury in a REHAB game earlier this season, so we are still WAYS away from him RETURNING.
The Indians are having a DISAPPOINTING season thus far, coming into this weekend with a TEN and a HALF game DEFICIT in the AL Central, a division they WON the past THREE seasons but for the Yankees, who go into the series with a ONE and a HALF game LEAD in the AL East, it is an IMPORTANT start for their BEST pitcher this season.
Domingo German comes into this game in a THREE way TIE for the MOST wins in the MLB this season but he has been AWFUL in his last TWO starts so he needs a BOUNCE BACK start as he is APPROACHING his INNINGS LIMIT and his season is going to END sooner rather than later.
