Over the course of the College Football season, I will have a review for the weekend action. The review blogs will be released every Monday morning, but since yesterday was Labor Day, I have the review of Week 1 hitting the newsstands right now. The review blogs will have a same format, in which I will list the Top 10 biggest things from the weekend. Be sure to check back every Monday, to catch up on what you missed out on the weekend.
Number 10- Howard University does not pay attention to Point Spreads
This game happened late Saturday night after most people were sleeping. The game between UNLV and Howard was not going to be national news until Howard made it national news. Howard pulled off the biggest upset in College football history and had a statement win against UNLV.
Number 9- Turns out eyes are not necessary to snap the ball
This was by far the coolest moment of the weekend. Jake Olson has been involved with the USC program for a while now, but what he did on Saturday was incredible. Olson was able to snap the ball perfectly for the Trojans in a blowout win and everyone was a USC fan or one play on Saturday.
Number 8- Clemson band does not mind being the bad guy
Nothing like Marching band trying to grab the headlines. Clemson blew their opponent out on Saturday. The Tigers beat Ohio State 31-0 last season in the playoffs, and this callback by their marching band earns them a spot in this week’s review.
Number 7- Jim Harbaugh is a very good football coach
Michigan blew out Florida on Saturday and Harbaugh played a big role. The Wolverines were down early to Florida, before Harbaugh did one of his magic tricks. The Michigan defense was lights out in the second half and they were able to get a signature win early in the season.
Number 6- Ohio State still a very good football program
The Buckeyes had a disappointing first half in their game against Indiana. They were losing in a game that experts predicted them to win in a blow out. The Buckeyes made some adjustments during half time and came out firing in the second half. The Buckeyes rolled in the second half and did blow out Indiana in the first big game of the season on Thursday night.
Number 5- Baker Mayfield made a smart decision by staying in school
Mayfield dominated in the first game for Oklahoma under their new head coach. Mayfield has a chance to have a great season to cap off his year and got off on the right foot on Saturday. The Sooners won their game against UTEP in a blow out and should climb up the AP rankings.
Number 4- Texas football is not back just yet
The three big schools of Texas had disappointing games on Saturday. Texas lost in an upset at home against Maryland, in the first game under new head coach, Tom Hermann. The Longhorns were expected to blow out Maryland but gave up 40 points to their offense. Baylor started their long rebuilding process after NCAA violations by losing to Liberty. The Bears hit a new low by losing to Liberty, a school that cancelled classes after the win against Baylor. Texas A&M played their game on national TV on Sunday night and looked like a great team. The Aggies blew the second biggest lead in College Football history to UCLA and people are already calling for head coach Kevin Sumlin’s job.
Number 3- Josh Rosen is the real deal
In the game against Texas A&M, we saw the coming out party of UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosen is going to be a top pick in the NFL Draft, and he added to his value on Sunday night. Rosen struggled early in the game, but was great in the fourth quarter and led the Bruins to a big win. I cannot wait till the Jets draft Rosen and he turns out to be a bust.
Number 2- FSU is done
I do not get why good teams want to play Alabama even though they do not have to. Florida State willingly scheduled Alabama to try to get a big win early in the season, but their plan imploded big time. Not only did the Seminoles lose to the Tide, they also lost their starting quarterback for the season. Deandre Francois got hurt after a sack in the game and is now going to be out for the season. The Seminoles basically ended their season in the first week of the regular season by facing Alabama.
Number 1- The Tide keep on Rolling
Alabama blew out Florida State and already a marque win this season. The Tide were great on Saturday and might have just crossed their biggest hurdle of the season. The Tide will go into conference play as a team that is on the cusp of winning the National Championship once again.
Those were some observations from Week 1 of the College Football season, check back next week for some more observations.
